Figment #1 & 2

So here's some of my work on the latest Disney Kingdom series, Figment. Well, the first two issues, at any rate. I had lots of fun with Filipe Andrade's masterful art here, and got to do a bit of experimenting with new techniques (pushing for that "storybook" feel here). Nothing ground-breaking, really, but I'm pretty pleased with the way it came out (although I have to admit I was sad that all those vibrant pinks and purples didn't print so well...)! And to make things better, the first 3 issues of the series all sold out and had to go for second printings! I'm keeping my fingers crossed the the next two issues. ;)

Vintage Doom & Thor

In my rare spare moments, I help artist Peter Repovski with colouring some of his pinups. His style has such a decidedly old-school vibe that I couldn't help give these two pieces the vintage treatment. Unfortunately, it wasn't really what he was looking for (he prefers more "modern" and colourful stuff), so he decided not to use these two.

I, on the other hand, am rather quite fond of these. If nothing else, I think they'd make sweet t-shirts. ;) I'll probably have more of his pinups posted in the future, so keep an eye out!

Seekers of the Weird 4 & 5

Holy falling behind, Batman. I've been so busy lately that I've completely neglected my little corner of the internet. So much has happened since my last post that I don't even know how to begin catching up.

I suppose I could start with the last two issues of Seekers of the Weird. I was pretty sad to see this one go, actually-- I had a lot of fun on this series. I know my weird color choices didn't agree with everyone, but there's just something about a drastic monochromatic shift that gets me going. ;)

Anyway, on to the pages (all of which feature art by series-standard Karl Moline)! First, a few from issue 4, which is probably my favourite of the run.

 And some choice pages from #5. Thanks to all who supported this book, and I hope you enjoyed it! Or at least, the colours. ;)

Avengers Undercover #1

So, apparently I'm falling behind on these posts again. Work as been completely crazy lately, so please try to forgive. ;) Anyway, here are a few pages from Avengers Undercover, the follow-up to Avengers Arena. Kev Walker is back on pencil duty, and really blew this one out of the water. I'm starting to be a huge fan of his work.

I tried to do some different things for this book, especially compared to Arena, but I'm still not sure it's paying off. I went back-and-forth with Kev on the style after he voiced that he preferred cleaner, less intrusive rendering that doesn't "fight" with the lineart. I totally agree with that, so I went with a simpler cell-shaded look. I have to admit that I'm still working out the kinks, but some times I can get behind it (currently on issue 6). Oh, and I also love how those purples completely disappear in print... Curses to CMYK!

Disney Kingoms: Seekers of the Weird #3

And here we go again with Seekers of the Weird! In order to give series regular Karl Moline a bit of a break, this issue was drawn by the talented Filipe Andrade. I have to say I was very much pleased with how these pages turned out. The faux-watercolour style blended perfectly with Filipe's dynamic and almost surreal artwork to create something truly special. I think so, at least.

Interestingly enough, I'm colouring Filipe's artwork once again on the next Disney Kingdom series, Figment, which is coming out in June. Be sure to check that out!

Rocket Raccoon #1 cover

So I'm currently colouring Skottie Young's upcoming Rocket Raccoon book, but that's still far from ready for release. For now though, here's the cover for the first issue. When Skottie told me wanted a classic fantasy painting like something by Frazetta, I nearly crapped myself. That's stuff I love to do, so it all fell into place naturally. I've never felt more comfortable working over his art, and I think it came out pretty good, though it's somewhat lacking in scantily-clad women...

Disney Kingdoms: Seekers of the Weird #2

And now a few choice pages from issue 2 of the Seekers of the Weird mini. Lately, I've been making it a point to work with a limited palette. I find it's good exercise, and makes me think carefully about colour choices. That said, I think it started working against me in this issue (perhaps even the series as a whole). Perhaps I need to rethink this approach.

Anyway, not much to say beyond that, really-- much of the same we got from issue 1. ;)
